We have always defended the idea that the value of a family leisure complex, whether it is a resort, a campsite or a water park, goes far beyond the technical characteristics of its facilities.
It is relatively easy to assess the impact of a water park on the guest simply by measuring the number of slides, the metres of free fall or the size of its pool. But, when we think about it, visitors actually take away a different kind of memory from the experience they have lived, such as the first impression created by that giant tower when they saw it from a distance, the laughter while sliding through the different sections of a waterslide or that children’s area where they felt the space was ‘magical’.
Taking several success stories from projects that are part of our Safe Fun client network as a reference, in this post we will explore how the design of that WOW experience takes shape in very different ways. The aquatic attractions at the Nickelodeon and Hard Rock Riviera Maya hotels, as well as at the Xel-Há and Xplor parks, show that there are completely different ways to build aquatic leisure spaces with a unique identity.
What kind of aquatic entertainment architecture could you apply to your own project?
In traditional theme parks, architecture serves a purpose that goes far beyond creating attractive spaces. It is designed to prepare the arrival, guide the eye and build memories through a carefully planned sequence of moments.
The same thing happens in aquatic environments, even if the language changes. And this has huge value for any leisure project.
How can a catalogue of attractions become a map of unforgettable scenes?
An aquatic attraction occupies a physical space on the plan, of course. But when it is well designed and/or surrounded by strong storytelling, it also occupies a specific place in the user’s memory, regardless of the budget or the size of the water park. The key lies in choosing a clear central idea, supporting the design of areas with different functions, and building disruptive communication with users as a way to leave visitors with a memorable impression.
The success stories we are presenting make this idea tangible through very different scenarios.
1. Nickelodeon hotels and how to bring the universe of a renowned brand into their Aqua Nick water parks (Riviera Maya and Punta Cana)
Aqua Nick works as an immersion into the Nickelodeon brand universe through the design of its facilities. Soak Summit Tower provides height and visual impact through an 18-metre tower with several levels and high-intensity slides. The project becomes especially interesting when we look at the layout of the site. Paw Patrol Adventure Bay is designed for users aged 0 to 3, with four adapted slides. Activity Pool introduces activities such as Wave Ball and climbing walls, while Adventure River and Lazy River offer waves, landscapes and rides with surprises. This is complemented by participatory activities such as Super Sliming and dining areas integrated into the setting.
Children enter a space where bathing, food, music, slime and games all speak the same language.

2. Hard Rock Hotel and how to use its Rockaway Bay water park within a global communication and positioning strategy
Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya conceives its Rockaway Bay water park as another strategic communication element that supports the family experience built around a resort fully themed around the world of music. The hotel organises its facilities around its mix of family, music, beach and all-inclusive living, using its message to shape each space in the guest’s mind.
Rockaway Bay Water Park leads the family offer, and the key to its success lies in how it is explained to the public, sparking interest and the desire to experience it before guests even set foot in the resort.
Thanks to this narrative approach, water takes on different identities: family park, children’s area, snorkelling point, party area or relaxation refuge. Designing a facility through its communication provides important strategic value. Naming, segmenting and presenting each area correctly helps guests visualise their trip from home, creating expectations that are fully aligned with the brand identity.

3. Xplor Park and how Toboganxote becomes a one-of-a-kind attraction in the world while integrating into a wild natural environment
Xplor Park builds its identity by combining the aquatic environment with the jungle, caves, amphibious vehicles and even darkness during its night-time passes. Visitors move between zip-line circuits, driving routes through flooded caverns and underground expeditions.
And in the middle of this environment appears Toboganxote, the world’s only 5-in-1 waterslide, where a single ride lets users experience different forms of fun, such as twists, climbs and drops with the aquatic inflatable, or even a bowl slide in the middle of the route.
The strength of this attraction also lies in its integration within a park built around exploration, cave entry and constant changes of setting. It works as a peak of intensity within a larger story. Users perceive this structure as a key challenge within their expedition. When combined with land-based and underground elements, a major attraction multiplies its effectiveness, benefiting from an overall design that prepares it and gives it coherence.
4. Xel-Há Park and the imposing architecture of its Scenic Lighthouse
Xel-Há Park approaches leisure by distributing the spotlight among different types of attractions throughout the park. The experience invites visitors to snorkel in an inlet connected to the Caribbean, float along rivers, walk through the jungle and enjoy cenotes, zip-lines and jumps. However, the Scenic Lighthouse attraction adds a spectacular vertical dimension by inviting visitors to climb to a height of 40 metres, enjoy a 360-degree view and descend through a waterslide into a natural pool.
